VA’s Richmond (AP) – A high-profile race has revolved around a candidate whose campaign was impacted by disclosures of her involvement in sexual activities with her husband on an explicit website, as the Democrats seek to take control of the Virginia House of Delegates in Tuesday’s election.

In one of the state’s most competitive districts, Suzanna Gibson is running against Republican businessman David Owen in the House of Delegates race that resulted from the redrawing of all 100 seats in accordance with the 2020 census.

Several political scientists wrote off Gibson’s chances after The Washington Post revealed that she had engaged in live-streamed sex and demanded payment from viewers for obscene actions. Gibson, a nurse practitioner, refused to concede the contest, claiming that Republicans were using dirty politics to reveal her actions. She focused on reproductive rights, which Democrats say might be in jeopardy if Republicans take control of the legislature, and mostly rejected the accusations. Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin has proposed a 15-week abortion ban, with the exception of situations involving rape, incest, or situations in which the mother’s life is in jeopardy.

Republicans insisted on reminding people about Gibson’s videos. The Republican Party of Virginia distributed mailings to voters that included screenshots, cautioning recipients that the envelope contained sexual material and recommending minors not to open it.

Gibson responded to her GOP assailants on Monday in a fairly belligerent manner in an opinion piece for the left-leaning website Blue Virginia. She called them “politicians” who believe they have a right to know what goes on in our personal lives and to manipulate our behavior with our bodies.

Parts of the western Richmond suburbs in the counties of Henrico and Goochland are included in the 57th district. Based on current voting patterns, the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project assessed it as the third most competitive House of Delegates district in Virginia, with a slight Republican lean. Voter registration in Virginia is not party-specific.

Democrats presently have a slight majority in the Senate while Republicans control a narrow majority in the House of Delegates. Youngkin has actively campaigned for Republicans in important districts in the hopes that they will be able to pass their legislative agenda since the GOP controls the legislature.
