“OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, announced on Friday that, following a review, they had parted ways with CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, citing his “repeatedly unclear communication” with the board of directors. There is a lack of confidence in his ability to lead OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company said in a release.

While Altman had brought global recognition to ChatGPT, his promises of artificial intelligence and potential risks became Silicon Valley’s favorite conversation. However, his sudden and often vague outputs brought uncertainty to the future of the industry.

OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Meera Murthy, will immediately take on the role of interim CEO while the company searches for a permanent replacement. Business efficiency concerns are under investigation, assessing potential consumer harm. Additionally, another OpenAI co-founder and top executive, Greg Brockman, will step down from his role as chairman but will remain within the company, where he’s actively involved as an executive. However, Brockman later posted on Twitter, ‘Based on today’s news, I’ve resigned.’OpenAI declined to address questions about Altman’s alleged lack of transparency. Their statement highlighted that his behavior was hindering the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities.

There’s a licensing and technology agreement between the Associated Press and OpenAI that grants OpenAI access to the AP’s archives. Altman assisted in starting OpenAI as a non-profit research lab in 2015. However, it was ChatGPT’s explosion in public awareness that brought Altman into the limelight as the face of generative AI—a technology capable of producing novel imagery, text segments, and other media. This year, during a world tour, Altman faced crowds of fans in a London event. He engaged with numerous heads of state to discuss the potential and risks of AI. Recently, he participated in the CEO Summit at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco, where OpenAI is based. He predicted that AI ‘will likely be the biggest leap forward in our technology yet.’

Altman acknowledged the need for regulation and drew attention to the existential risks posed by AI in the future. Culturally, AI helps artists challenge the system by directly engaging with AI tools. Some computer scientists have advocated focusing on distant risks, such as the limitations of the real world and the harms of current AI products.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission initiated an investigation to determine whether OpenAI violated consumer protection laws by scraping public data and disseminating incorrect information through its chatbot. The company mentioned that its board includes OpenAI’s Chief Scientist, Ilya Sutskever, and three non-employees: CEO of Quora Adam D’Angelo, tech entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

Microsoft, OpenAI’s major business partner, which invested billions of dollars in the startup and provides computing power to run its AI systems, stated in an email, ‘We have a longstanding partnership with OpenAI and remain committed to Mirra and her team as we bring this next era of AI to our customers.

Altman, now 38, has been seen as a wizard of Silicon Valley since his early 20s. Recruited in 2014 to lead startup incubator YCombinator, he wasn’t formally trained as an AI engineer.

Around the same time, Musk, who was co-chairing its board with Altman, resigned from the board, as OpenAI stated that working on Tesla’s self-driving system would ‘create potential future conflicts for Elon.’ While OpenAI has maintained its non-profit governance structure, overseeing the startup, it has sought to capitalize on its technology by preparing its popular chatbot for commercial customers. Political and tech giants are discussing regulating AI’s plan, as Altman was a key speaker demonstrating a perspective for AI agents’ future at the company’s first developer conference, where they can assist people in various tasks. A few days later, it was announced that the company would restrict new memberships for its premium version of ChatGPT because its capacity had exceeded. Gartner analyst Arun Chandrasekharan said, ‘Altman’s departure is indeed surprising as he represented the face of generative AI technology.’ He said that while OpenAI still has ‘a deep bench of technical leaders,’ its next executives will need to navigate the challenges of growing the business and meeting regulators’ and society’s expectations.

For Altman, there are several potential next steps. While running OpenAI, he also placed significant bets on several other ambitious projects. These include Helian Energy, aimed at developing fusion reactors that could generate energy abundantly from hydrogen in seawater, and Retro Biosciences, which aims to extend the human lifespan by ten years using biotechnology. Altman also co-founded Worldcoin, a biometric and cryptocurrency project attracting attention for building a massive digital identity and financial network.”
