Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is not often bold or showy, unlike Representatives Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), or Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia). Johnson actually has a “soft-spoken” and quiet manner.

from when it comes to policy, Johnson is anything from moderate. The new House Speaker, dubbed “MG Mike” by the Democrats, is a devoted supporter of Republican Donald Trump who attempted to revoke the 2020 election results. He is also a devout Christian nationalist.

In an article published on NPR’s website on November 9, journalists Deirdre Walsh and Vincent Acovino emphasized that the Democrats are planning to use Johnson’s far-right history as part of their strategy to regain control of the United States House of Representatives in 2024.

Suzan DelBene (D-Washington), Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told NPR, “While he may be unknown to the general public, I think where he stands and how extreme he is, that is coming to light every day. You know, someone who wanted to overturn the 2020 election, someone who wants to ban abortion nationwide, someone who wants to cut Social Security and cut Medicare.”

DelBene asserts that the fact that the Republicans unanimously backed Johnson’s confirmation as Speaker suggests that they are prepared to publicly and unambiguously represent the leader of their party in Congress across the nation.

According to DelBene, “The fact that every single Republican supported him, that was unanimous, sort of says that they are ready to stand in Congress with someone who is representing these perspectives as a party leader and, in a clear way, a leader representing these perspectives throughout the country.” In 2024, House Republicans may have a lot on their plate, particularly in swing areas.

Truly every conservative upheld him,” she went on. Everybody settled on that. It implies, in a sense, that they are prepared to join forces in Congress with an individual who is leading these positions both as the head of the party and, clearly, as the leader of those positions across the nation.
